Background of the Study
Bilingual vocabulary acquisition is a fundamental aspect of early childhood education, setting the stage for future language proficiency. In Nigerian early childhood settings, educators employ various strategies to facilitate the acquisition of vocabulary in both indigenous languages and English. These strategies include interactive storytelling, visual aids, and digital media, which have been shown to improve word recognition and usage (Oladele, 2023). Effective vocabulary instruction not only boosts language skills but also enhances cognitive development and academic readiness. Research has demonstrated that early, deliberate exposure to diverse vocabulary fosters long-term linguistic competence and literacy (Adegoke, 2024). However, challenges such as limited teacher training, insufficient resources, and cultural disparities can impede the success of these strategies. This study evaluates the effectiveness of current vocabulary acquisition strategies in Nigerian early childhood education, exploring how various instructional methods impact bilingual vocabulary growth and overall language development (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the implementation of multiple vocabulary acquisition strategies, many Nigerian children struggle to achieve balanced bilingual proficiency. Inadequate resources, inconsistent teaching methods, and insufficient teacher training hinder effective vocabulary learning (Oladele, 2023). As a result, children may experience delays in language development, affecting their academic performance and long-term literacy skills (Adegoke, 2024). The lack of systematic evaluation of these strategies limits the ability to identify best practices and develop targeted interventions. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of existing bilingual vocabulary acquisition strategies and to recommend improvements to support robust language development in early childhood settings (Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess current vocabulary acquisition strategies in early childhood education.

  • To determine their impact on bilingual vocabulary development.

  • To propose enhancements for effective vocabulary instruction.

Research Questions:

  • What vocabulary acquisition strategies are currently employed?

  • How do these strategies affect bilingual vocabulary growth?

  • What improvements can be made to optimize vocabulary acquisition?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the efficacy of bilingual vocabulary acquisition strategies in Nigerian early childhood education. The findings will help educators refine instructional methods and allocate resources more effectively to support balanced vocabulary development and long-term academic success (Oladele, 2023; Adegoke, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing vocabulary acquisition strategies in early childhood education and does not cover other language domains.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Bilingual Vocabulary Acquisition: The process of learning and retaining vocabulary in two languages.

  • Early Childhood Education: Formal education provided to young children, typically ages 3–6 years.

  • Instructional Strategies: Methods and techniques used in teaching.
